Sadly, about 35% of what Dr. Ramsey Amin D.D.S. performs is “re-do” implant dentistry…saving, removing, or replacing failed dental implants with problems.

Not only do we treat patients for with complex single front tooth to full mouth (all on 4 implants), but unfortunately an increasing amount of patients who have problems with dental implants. This is often referred to as “peri-implantitis.”

What should you do if one of your dental implants failed?

Dental implants are not permanent

While dental implants are supposed to last a lifetime, sometimes they don’t.  Even full arch implants can have problems.

Why do dental implants fail? What causes dental implants to fail? What are some dental implant problems to be aware of (even years after implant placement)?

Implants fail due to poor planning, improper placement, inadequate bone/gum, bad materials, or underlying health conditions.  Even a ‘simple” crown and abutment  can cause major problems.  Often an inexperienced dentist does not see the intricacies or take on a case beyond their skill.

‘Most’ of these problems are avoidable by having this done right the first time.

Dental implant failure symptoms and signs

What does a failed dental implant feel like or look like? People usually don’t notice symptoms of pending implant failure. Other times, they may choose to ignore the symptoms. In either case, the symptoms listed below are the most common associated with implant failure.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact our office immediately. These are signs of failed implants. Sometimes early treatment can help to save an implant that may otherwise need to be replaced.

Treatment for failing implants

1. Initial Consultation

We determine a diagnosis and treatment plan by performing a very thorough exam.  A 3D scan will be necessary to evaluate your bone on a computer and do “virtual surgery.”  Photographs, digital models and face scanning will be utilized as well. The gums will be measured for thickness and quality

2.  Discuss Options to Fix Failed Implants

Discuss options to save the failed implants or replace the failed implants.   Techniques to salvage the implants may be adding bone, adding gum from the palate, laser treatment, antibiotic treatment, replacing screws/abutments.

If the implants need to be replaced, Dr. Amin is often able to replace it with a new one on the same day so that you are never without teeth.  This includes placement of complex zygomatic implants into the cheekbones.

Dr. Amin will also give you a prognosis for how long this may last.  He will be very honest with you so that you understand the long-term.

3.  Treatment

Treatment may involve removing and replacing the failed implants or trying to rescue and save the implants.

Dr. Amin has tremendous experience in helping people save implants that are even 30-40 years old!

A bad implant can be removed and replaced with a new one on the same day.  Bone grafting can be done as well.

Treatment can be performed under IV sedation while you sleep.  A fixed full arch solution can also be done in a single day if all of your teeth and/or implants need to be removed.
